      I knew that I wanted to be a teacher but I didn’t know I would end up now in Epidemiology at UCC. I started with PE and Chemistry, then I did a PhD in Epidemiology. Then I taught for a while in secondary school. Then I was doing research for two years. then I got my job lecturing. So sometimes your career path changes along the way. Actually, that is the situation for most people now. Very few people did what our parents and grandparents did and stick with the same job and career. It’s great that we have so many choices now. You will have choices too. My best advice is to do something you are interested in.

      I was really indecisive! I didn’t know even when I was filling out my CAO tbh… I ended up taking out time to work and live abroad for a while, this helped me try different jobs and figure out what I liked, didn’t like, what things were important to me in a job. I went back to college as a mature student at 24, and I’d say I only really fully decided on pursuing science as a career in the 3rd/4th year of my degree. It’s okay to not know what you want, there are many ways to achieve career objectives and the Leaving Cert is only one avenue. Imo the most important thing is to pick something that you like, as it will be much easier for you to persevere with it.
