My Work: The cells of our body behave as a big community where everybody takes care of their neighbors. When some of these cells detect that something wrong is happening, they call to the body police (immune system cells) that try to take care of the problem. Sometimes, these police cells react against healthy cells by mistake causing diseases like multiple sclerosis. My work is focused in the discovery of new treatments to avoid this overreaction and maintain the harmony in the cell community of our body.

My Work: I am studying bacteria, how they talk to one another using special chemical signals, and how we might be able to interrupt their conversations using new drugs in order to control problematic bacteria that can cause disease.

Status: End of an amazing experience, very grateful to have been able to take part in IAS. Hope to see some of you doing work experience in the future, stay...

My Work: I teach a lot of Epidemiology. This is a Science that goes along with Public Health and it tells us about health and disease in population. So for example, promoting physical activity, tackling obesity, making sure children are vaccinated - these are all areas of Public Health. We call this population health because we talk about these activities for many many people. Epidemiology is also used in patient focused health. That is health at the individual level. So when I teach epidemiology for patient focused health, it is usually clinical trials. What do you know about clinical trials? Most people think about new drugs? A simple clinical trial is a study of two groups of patients, who are randomised (toss of a coin so it is fair) to receive the treatment (new drug) or the standard treatment (old drug). It is a fair comparison because the patients had an equal chance of receiving the new drug or the old drug.

My Work: I'm a neuroscientist which means I study brains. I look at how different parts of the brain connect to one another and what happens when those connections stop working. I'm really interested in children's brains because they work differently to adult brains.
